Jason's Saturday
On our way to the hotel, we drove through a couple
different areas of Havana, giving us a chance to see the local
architecture. There is a mix of blocky concrete structures and richly
ornamented mansions.  Many of the houses are in disrepair, but it is
easy to see that the concrete structures were once imposing and bold,
the mansions once grand and beautiful. Though the concrete is chipped
and cracked, the paint on the façades is peeling and the windows are
boarded up, the people living inside go about their daily routines. We
passed houses, schools, stores, and government buildings. Interestingly,
among the dilapidation, there is a surprising amount of art. We passed
one building, which seemed to be a government building of sorts, with a
huge sculpted safety pin stuck into the portico and out through the
roof. Even though the living conditions here would be considered
squalid, were we stateside, the local people still take time to make
art, and music, and enjoy life with a passion that can only be described
 as inspiring.
